Bringing the Flint Soap Box Derby Back to Its Historic Home

Some projects are about creating great branding. Others are about helping bring a piece of community history back to life.


This spring, Behind Your Design had the privilege of supporting the return of the Flint Soap Box Derby to Cronin Derby Downs, the original home of the Flint Soap Box Derby, where racing first began in 1969.


On May 30, 2026, the newly restored track welcomed racers, families, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters back to the hill for the inaugural race at its historic location. It was a day filled with excitement, nostalgia, and community pride, but the impact of the Soap Box Derby extends far beyond a single race day.

More Than a Race

The Flint Soap Box Derby is a year-round STEM program that gives students the opportunity to design, build, and race their own gravity-powered cars while developing valuable life skills.


Participants gain hands-on experience in:

  • Engineering and design
  • Problem solving
  • Teamwork
  • Critical thinking
  • Sportsmanship


The program continues to grow each year, with:

  • 100+ students participating annually
  • 150+ mentors, volunteers, students, and family members attending workshops
  • Nearly 400 attendees on race day
  • A commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial circumstances


With the permanent track now restored at Cronin Derby Downs, the focus is not simply on hosting an annual race. The vision is to build a lasting educational program that inspires future engineers, innovators, and leaders throughout the Flint community.

Helping Tell the Story

Behind Your Design supported the event through branding and marketing, creating promotional products, apparel, and event signage to maintain a cohesive and professional experience for participants, sponsors, volunteers, and spectators. Seeing everything come together on race day while watching hundreds of people celebrate the reopening of Cronin Derby Downs made BYD so proud to be a part of this community event.

A Successful Day at the 2026 MSU Vendor Fair

We had a fantastic time at the 2026 Michigan State University Vendor Fair ! It was a great day of connecting with so many wonderful people including current customers, new faces and plenty of potential future clients from departments and organizations across campus. One of the biggest hits at our booth was our T-shirt bags , which definitely got people talking. We also had lots of interest in the fully sublimated, two-sided umbrella we created for the CRIM Fitness Foundation. It was a great example of how a promotional product can go beyond simply adding a logo and become something truly custom and memorable.

Each item was chosen with quality and function in mind because a great branded gift doesn’t have to be elaborate. The 2026 LAFF Pathways Pancake Breakfast takes place Sunday, October 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Serendipity Spa of Linden, 129 E. Broad Street in Linden, Michigan. Our team has been working behind the scenes on event coordination, permits, schedules, timelines, setup and marketing to keep the details organized leading up to the event.

How Thoughtful Details Made Connor & Gabrielle's Celebration Unforgettable

When people think back on a wedding, they usually remember the big moments, the ceremony, the first dance, and the reception. But it's often the thoughtful details that make a big day feel even more special for both the couple and the people celebrating with them. This July, we had the chance to be part of another Macksood family wedding as Connor and Gabrielle tied the knot. After helping with Hannah and Reed's wedding, it was so much fun to work with the family again and create another collection of custom pieces for such a memorable day. From custom signage to personalized drinkware, every item added a little something to the celebration. A Wedding Full of Personal Touches Connor and Gabrielle wanted every part of their wedding to reflect their personalities, their style, and the story they wanted to tell. That's exactly what custom products can do. For their big day, we created custom pens, cups, napkins, a felt letter board sign, photo coasters featuring the couple, and an acrylic sign. We also created custom shirts and socks that added another fun, personalized element to the wedding festivities.
