Buying fine jewelry can be like learning a new language, which can be intimidating for some people. It involves many facets, which makes it next to impossible for an untrained eye to navigate the process and grasp the quality of a particular piece.

People experience an emotional roller coaster while shopping for and picking out fine jewelry because this is not something they do every day. Most people make fine jewelry purchases multiple times throughout their lives to mark their moments filled with emotional significance. “The biggest thing I hear from my clients is ‘I don’t want the same ring or earrings my friend has.’ They want something different, unique to their personality,” explains Ronny Medawar, owner of Medawar Jewelers in Flint Township, Fenton and Lansing Frandor. “If you go to the mall, you’ll see several jewelry stores with the same selection because they are all owned by the same people.”

I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, but when I do, I want to make sure it’s a piece that holds significance to me and that reflects my own personality. A few years ago, I was out shopping at a clothing store and found a unique costume jewelry ring that I absolutely loved. Upon closer inspection, I could see it was cheaply made, but I didn’t care. I figured if I got a couple of months out of it, it would be worth it.

A few weeks after I purchased the ring, and many compliments from friends and family, I went to Medawar Jewelers in Fenton to see if I could find a similar ring. I wanted this piece, in real gold and diamonds, to mark a huge moment in my professional life and to be a constant reminder of how hard work and integrity will always pay off. As many business owners know, owning a business has many ups and downs, so it’s important to learn from the downs and celebrate the ups.

As I was looking through the ring selection, Ronny came out of the office to say hi, and I started to show him my ring and how I thought it was unique. I explained why I was trying to find a real piece to replace it.

“I remember when Chelsea came in, she was showing me her ring and explaining that she wasn’t able to find any rings similar to it which were made with real gold and diamonds,” Ronny says. “You should have seen the look on her face when I told her we could make something custom, just for her.”

I told him I thought custom rings were only for engagement or wedding rings, and I winced as I asked him how much it was going to cost me. I totally expected the custom ring to cost a fortune and was shocked when it was the same price as some of the other pieces I was looking at. Plus, it took only about 25 minutes for Ronny to explain what the process was and that the ring would be complete in two to three weeks. I decided to go ahead with the custom design experience.

After one week, I received a call from the store that my 3-D rendering was completed, and I was able to make any final adjustments to the drawing before they cast the mold and created my unique ring. Just one week after the approval, I got the call saying the ring was ready. I went into the store to pick it up, and it was perfect, exactly what I wanted. Now it is a piece of fine jewelry that will stay in the family and that I can pass down to my daughter one day.

It is critical to understand that the best deal on fine jewelry can come from an independent jeweler as opposed to a major chain jeweler. In celebrating life’s special and important moments, it’s important to know that when you choose an independent jeweler, you are choosing a family-owned business that has been supplying genuine fine jewelry for decades.

I also was encouraged to bring all my rings for complimentary routine cleanings and checkups to make sure that all the stones are secure. Because I wear my rings daily, damage could occur, or stones could become loose without my knowledge.
